According to recent data from PROCOMER, by the end of August 2024, Costa Rican goods exports reached USD 12.958 billion, representing a 7% increase compared to the same period of the previous year, with a rise of USD 902 million.
The precision and medical equipment sector, which accounts for 42% of total exports, led this growth with a 12% increase. The agricultural sector, representing 19% of exports, also performed positively, recording a 7% growth driven by key products such as pineapple, banana, and watermelon. Meanwhile, the food industry, which makes up 13% of total exports, experienced a 5% increase.
Manuel Tovar, Minister of Foreign Trade, highlighted the importance of the 7% growth, led by the precision and medical equipment sector, as well as the recovery of the agricultural sector. Laura L\u00f3pez, General Manager of PROCOMER, emphasized the resilience and capacity of Costa Rica\u2019s export sector to strengthen its position in international markets.
Other sectors, such as the chemical-pharmaceutical and electrical-electronic industries, which each account for 5% of exports, recorded growth of 1% and 9%, respectively. The plastics sector also stood out with 9% growth, while the livestock and fishing sector grew by 4%. However, the metal-mechanic sector experienced a 3% contraction due to a decrease in the shipment of products such as iron and steel bars and tubes.
In terms of international markets, Costa Rican exports grew across several regions. North America registered a 10% increase, while Europe grew by 11%, driven mainly by medical device exports. The Caribbean and Central America saw growth of 2%, and South America 6%. In contrast, exports to Asia declined by 4%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
